Adopt A School – Partnership of the Year Award 2014-2015
Early in September 2014, Steve Tamburelli from Clos Du Val met with the new principal at Vichy Elementary School, Chris Byrne. Within just a few months, the Adopt A Vine program was launched with the 4th graders at Vichy Elementary School.
The Adopt A Vine program brings classroom concepts to life for Vichy’s 4th Graders and inspires excitement for learning that will likely continue for many years to come.
Adopt A Vine utilizes the knowledge and talents of the Clos Du Val team to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students and teachers. This hands-on program will take fourth grade students into the winery’s historic Stags Leap District Estate Vineyard at five different times throughout the 2015 growing season.
1st Visit: Starting in February each student adopted a Merlot vine, presentation included an overview of architecture and life cycle of the plants as well as a demonstration of winter pruning
2nd Visit: March – Bud break
3rd Visit: May – Rapid growth period and canopy management
4th Visit: September – Harvest
5th Visit: October – End of growing season life cycle
Visits are supported by in-class work designed to explore concepts like photosynthesis (biology), water usage and yields (mathematics) and fermentation science (chemistry).
The enthusiasm for developing and growing the partnership has resulted in a strong mutually beneficial relationship and an amazing new program that will make a very positive impact on students at Vichy Elementary.
Clos Du Val and Vichy Elementary were presented the Adopt A School Partnership of the Year Award for the 2014-2015 school year.
